Taeshaun Lyons ran a little longer route to get to the University of Washington football program, waiting for the second signing period on Wednesday to make it official, but the Huskies had no problem with that.

This pass-catcher from Tennyson High School in Hayward, California, adds a seventh 4-star player to this star-studded UW recruiting class, joining fellow receiver Rashid Williams and defensive backs Caleb Presley, Vincent Holmes and Curley Reed, and Landon Hatchett and Elisha Jackett, all of whom signed in December.

Lyons offered a confident message after providing his signed national letter of intent to the school.

"One thing you can expect me to bring is my big-time playmaking and electricity every time I touch the ball," he said in a video posted on social media by the UW.

The swift Lyons, who chose the UW over Notre Dame, Miami, Oregon and others, comes off a senior season in which he caught 47 passes for 1,007 yards and 10 touchdowns for his 8-3 Lancers team, and scored five more times on rushes and twice more on punt returns.

He joins a gilded UW wide-receiver crew for 2023 that now includes first-team All-Pac-12 selection Rome Odunze, fellow starters Jalen McMillan and Ja'Lynn Polk, veterans Giles Jackson, Taj Davis, Denzel Boston and Jabez Tinae, newcomers Germie Bernard, Keith Reynolds and Williams.

No position area for the Huskies is any deeper than this one. Most were 4-star recruits. Last year, Bernard was the UW's No. 1 prospect who signed with the UW, ended up at Michigan State and transferred back to the Huskies.

UW receivers coach JaMarcus Shephard welcomed Lyons to the program with the following assessment.

"Taeshaun is a very smooth receiver that has the ability to create separation at the top of his route," Shephard said. "He has deceptive speed and terrific balls skills. What we like most about Taeshaun is his unbelievable belief in himself."

What the Huskies need next is a quarterback who can throw to Lyons and the other younger receivers in future seasons, and that person might be close to committing.

Austin Mack of Pittsburgh High School, a 2024 QB who also hails from the Bay Area, is announcing his decision on Wednesday afternoon and the UW is believed to be the leader.
