In this story:

The college football scholarship offer has always been a matter of curiosity, handed out by University of Washington recruiters and others almost like a business card.

As a veteran Pac-12 recruiter explained, that's exactly what it is: a way in. You can't hold meaningful conversations with a high school recruit unless you've extended an offer and, if the recruit doesn't expect it to happen this way, there's something wrong with him.

It's a courtship, a slow dance, just a way of showing interest rather than a firm promised of full-fledged college financial support

While the recruiting services list each and every one of these offers, most mean absolutely nothing. Consider that the UW has probably made upwards of 500 offers since Kalen DeBoer's staff has taken over and the Huskies have brought in just two dozen and a half committed teenagers.

With that history lesson explained, the UW in recent days extended an offer to Khalil Terry, a 6-foot, 175-pound safety from Tustin, California.

He's from the class of 2027, just a freshman, yet a starter and the leading tackler for the 7-0 Tillers, a team with a nickname that describes the agricultural nature of its surroundings. He also has offers from Arizona and Nevada.

Terry is impressive for being an immediate freshman starter, which means he could really be good by the time he's a senior and a college freshman.

He's described as a serious-minded kid who doesn't say much, but is highly reliable on the football field, especially for being so young.

Terry now has a UW offer, an invitation to have a continued discussion with the Huskies, a starting point with Montlake.
