Unlike a lot of recruits, Plas Johnson pretty much is going through this process alone. He does not hail from a high school football powerhouse filled with prospects. His coach recently departed.

The 6-foot-1, 165-pound wide receiver enjoyed an 88-catch season even while his Chaparral High team in Scottsdale, Arizona, finished 3-7, with the often outmanned Firebirds losing their final four games of the season.

On top of that, Johnson's football coach, Brent Barnes, who directed Chaparral to an Arizona 6A state championship in 2020, resigned in February to take another job in Oklahoma.

Still, Johnson, a 3-star recruit in the Class of 2024, continues on this football journey, steadily picking up scholarship offers.

On Monday, he received one from Kalen DeBoer's University of Washington staff, giving him nine in all. Others pursuing him are Washington State, Oregon State, Utah State, UNLV, Nevada, Arizona, Northern Arizona and Colorado State.

His first name, Plas, is defined as a small pond, or a still body of water. Yet he's been anything but stationary.

Doubling as a track man, Johnson relies on speed to get where he's going, whether it be on a high school football field or through the recruiting process.

"He's able to put his foot in the ground and get someplace quick," said Barnes, his departed coach.

Johnson has clocked top 100- and 200-meter times of 11.1 and 22.3 seconds.

This past football season, he got loose for 8 touchdown passes and 1,157 yards of receiving yards, plus he returned a pair of kickoffs for scores.
