The West Virginia men's basketball program hasn't had much luck receiving waivers from the NCAA lately.

Last year, the governing body denied Jose Perez immediate eligibility despite his head coach at Manhattan getting canned two weeks prior to the start of the season. They appealed the decision and once again, the NCAA said, "Nope!"

Over the summer, fellow Manhattan transfer Omar Silverio was denied a waiver for one more year of eligibility, thus bringing his collegiate career to an end.

Now, the Mountaineers are hoping the same result doesn't occur with Montana State transfer RaeQuan Battle, who is still awaiting word on his eligibility.

"That's still ongoing," said head coach Josh Eilert. "It's in their hands and there's been some communication back and forth to get the information they [the NCAA] need on some follow-up issues but we've been getting that to them in a timely fashion and I look forward to getting an answer in the coming weeks."

Battle spent the first two years of his career at Washington, where he averaged 4.8 points per game in a rather limited role. Following the 2020-21 campaign he transferred to Montana State. Over the past two seasons, Battle has become a big part of their success averaging 13.1 points per contest. This season alone, he went for 17.7 points, 2.9 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.5 blocks a game while shooting 47% from the field and 35% from three.

Eilert went on to say that losing Battle would "drastically" hurt WVU's cause.

"RaeQuan's special. He really is special. He's probably our most natural athlete. He really scores the ball well. He can get himself his own shot. But defensively, if you go back to the Press Virginia days, he'd fit right in because he's so smooth and so athletic and so quick twitched compared to everybody else on that floor."
