West Virginia Wallops Cowboys

Morgantown, WV - West Virginia guard Erik Stevenson led all scorers with 23 points while forward Trey Mitchell scored a season-hihg 22 as the Mountaineers (16-12, 5-10) cruised to a 85-67 victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys (16-12, 7-8) Monday night.
West Virginia grabbed an early 10-5 advantage behind threes from guard Kedrian Johnson and Erik Stevenson.
Oklahoma tied the game at 10 but West Virginia held the Cowboys scoreless for 10 minutes which paved the way for a 22-4 Mountaineer run and held a 32-14 lead with four minutes left in the first half.
West Virginia forced 11 Oklahoma State turnovers in the first half while Stevenson and Johnson led all scorers with 11 points apiece at the break as the Mountaineers took a 19-point advantage into halftime, 40-21.
Stevenson started the scoring for the Mountaineers in the second half with a three and forward Jimmy Bell Jr. followed with an offensive putback, extending the Mountaineers lead to 22 out of the break.
The physicality amped up in the second half, and with just under 12 minutes remaining in the game, WVU forward Tre Mitchell grabbed his own miss as Oklahoma State forward Khalib Boone fought for the rebound, the two became entangled and a fracas ensued. At the Boone was charged with the foul and the two were both assessed technicals.
Mitchell hit both free throws, but the Cowboys dwindled the Mountaineers lead down to 13 at the midway point of the second half. However, West Virginia produced an 11-2 run capped off with a Stevenson three as West Virginia held a 73-51 lead with 7:53 left to play in the game.
West Virginia kept its distance from the Cowboys in the second half and led by as many as 23 points. Mountaineer forward Emmitt Matthews Jr. scored all nine of his points in the second half, Stevenson put in 14 of his 23 points in the second-d half and Mitchell produced 12 second half points as the Mountaineers coasted to an 85-67 win.
