Tony Fields II Wins Mountaineer Maven's Newcomer of the Year Award

Talk about making an impact! Tony Fields II did exactly that in 2020.

At the conclusion of each football season, the staff at Mountaineer Maven recognizes the best players on West Virginia's roster by handing out 11 different awards. The winners of the 5th Annual Mountaineer Maven Awards will be announced throughout the next week, beginning today with the Newcomer of the Year.

This 5th winner of the Mountaineer Maven Newcomer of the Year Award goes to linebacker Tony Fields II.

West Virginia finished the season as the nation's 4th best defense and No. 1 among Power Five schools allowing just 291.4 yards per game. A big part of that had to do with the play of Arizona transfer Tony Fields II who tallied 88 tackles (3rd in Big 12), four tackles for loss, one sack, one interception, four QB hits, and two pass breakups.

Fields II made play after play and always seemed to come up big when the West Virginia defense needed him most. He quickly emerged as not only one of the best players on the unit but a leader as well. Linebackers like Fields II don't come around all that often.

Instead of returning for an extra year of college ball, Fields II declared for the 2021 NFL Draft prior to West Virginia's bowl game vs Army. He is currently projected to go somewhere in the middle rounds as a day two pick.
