Carlson Reed to Skip Senior Year, Signs with Pirates

With the 104th pick (4th round) of the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected West Virginia right-handed pitcher, Carlson Reed. Friday, Reed officially forfeited his final year of eligibility at WVU by signing his pro contract alongside fellow Pirates draft picks Mitch Jebb, Patrick Reilly, and Landon Tomkins.

Reed signed for an underslot value of $600k, $46k short of the max he could have earned. Although he flourished in his role as a closer this past season at WVU, the Pirates will give him another opportunity to start in the minor leagues and see where that takes him. If he fails to develop into a quality prospect as a starter, they know he can be a reliable arm out of the bullpen, potentially as a high leverage reliever.
In 38 innings of work this spring, Reed punched out 60 hitters and held opponents to a .232 average.
