There has been a lot of buzz behind the new Charizard ex deck in the competitive Pokémon TCG community. The deck has been gaining momentum in the current meta, most recently taking first place at the Brazil Regional. Here’s how to play this new powerful deck.

Charizard ex was initially valuable for, well, it’s Charizard. But it quickly became obvious that this dark-type Charizard was dominating the competitive meta, able to take down popular decks like Mew VMAX.

How to Play Charizard ex in the Pokémon TCG

Mew VMAX and Gardevoir are both weak to dark and Lugia cannot one-shot a heavy boy like Charizard ex. For this reason, on top of your own impressive damage and energy acceleration, Charizard ex has become a top deck.

So how do you really make a Charizard ex deck good? First, you need Mew from Celebrations. Its ability allows you to look at the top six cards of your deck in an attempt to find VIP Pass early on. This lets you set up as quick as possible so you can evolve your Charmanders and steamroll opponents.

Next, play four copies of Arven. This supporter lets you search your entire deck for an item card and tool card. This is great if you go second, allowing you to grab a VIP Pass and Forest Seal Stone right away. Put Forest Seal Stone on your Entai V for a potential early game lead.

Another important component is Pidgeot ex since its ability allows you to search your deck for any card you want once per turn. Use this Pokémon to guarantee you get Rare Candy every turn, allowing you to evolve into Charizard ex.

As you can see, the strategy is to get your hands on a VIP Pass or two, setting up your Pokémon as fast as possible. When you grab Pokémon for your bench, take out a couple Charmander and then a Pidgeot. Then, use Arven to grab extra item and tool cards you need while using Pidgeot to also guarantee Rare Candy, evolving into Charizard ex as fast as possible.

Once you have your Charizard ex out, you can use its ability to get fire energy out of your deck and attach them to your Charizard ex on your board. By having multiple Charizard ex set up and ready to go, you can easily pressure and beat down your opponent with powerful attacks.
