Former Gophers running back Mo Ibrahim was cut Monday by the Detroit Lions.

Ibrahim was a casualty of Detroit signing safety Scott Nelson after two safeties were injured in the Lions' preseason loss to the Jaguars Saturday.

The 24-year-old running back rushed for nine yards on four attempts in Detroit's preseason opener against the Giants but did not feature in Saturday's loss to Jacksonville because of an injury.

If Ibrahim clears waivers, he’ll return to Detroit on the injured reserve list. It's unclear what injury he's dealing, nor is it clear how serious his injury is.

Ibrahim was signed by Detroit as an undrafted free agent after a record setting five-year career at the University of Minnesota in which he rushed for 4,668 yards and 53 touchdowns for the Gophers.
