Gophers' Daniel Oturu heads to Knicks, then Clippers after trade with Timberwolves
Former Minnesota Golden Gophers forward Daniel Oturu became the first men's basketball player to be drafted in 16 years when the Minnesota Timberwolves selected him with the 33rd overall pick in the NBA Draft.
Although the Timberwolves selected him, Oturu first was traded to the New York Knicks as part of a deal that helped the Wolves trade up to select Leandro Bolmero. The Knicks then traded the big man to the Clippers, where he will reunite with former Gopher Amir Coffey.
Oturu is a Cretin-Derham Hall alum who starred for the Raiders before playing the last two seasons with the Gophers. After a solid freshman year, Oturu put himself on the draft radar with a monster season with 20.1 points per game, 11.3 rebounds per game and 2.5 blocks per game as part of an All-Big Ten campaign.
After being drafted by the Wolves, Oturu becomes the first Gopher men's basketball player to be drafted since Kris Humphries went 14th overall to the Utah Jazz in 2004.
