Maya Moore to sit out third straight WNBA season
Maya Moore last played in the WNBA for the Minnesota Lynx in 2018, and he absence as one of the league's brightest stars will continue through the upcoming 2021 season.
Moore, 31, announced Wednesday on "Good Morning America" that she continues to settle in after helping free the man – Jonathan Irons – she's now married to from what has been ruled a wrongful prison conviction.
"This journey has been quite a while, so I'm trying to take that time to get settled," said Moore. "Now we just got married, I'm still planning on taking some rest and really just leaning into this season of enjoying Jonathan and having this full year."
Irons served 22 years of a 50-year sentence after being convicted of burglary and assaulting a homeowner with a gun in Moore's home state of Missouri. Moore and Irons' attorney argued that the evidence supporting Irons' innocence was overwhelming, leading to a victory in the case in 2020.
Their journey together will be featured in an ESPN "30 for 30" documentary that is set to be released this week, according to GMA host Robin Roberts, whose company, Rock'n Robin Productions, worked with ESPN Films on the documentary.
Moore is a four-time WNBA champion with the Lynx, earning both regular season and WNBA Finals MVP awards, along with the 2011 Rookie of the Year honor and six All-Star appearances.
She also won a pair of NCAA championships at UConn, where some of her freshman records are now being broken by former Hopkins standout, Paige Bueckers.
