Minnesota United release 2024 schedule, will not play Messi in regular season

Minnesota open home schedule against defending champion Columbus Crew

Minnesota United will host defending champion Columbus Crew for their 2024 home opener on March 2. The Loons will travel to Texas to take on Austin FC for the season opener Feb. 24, details now known after the league announced the 2024 schedule on Wednesday.

MNUFC missed the playoffs for the first time in five years in 2023 after failing to qualify on the final day of the regular season in a 3-1 loss at rival Sporting KC. United finished with a 10-11-13 record and saw the team's only manager in the MLS era, Adrian Heath, fired with two games left in the season.

Looking to rebound in 2024, the club will have a difficult opening five games, with four of their first five opponents finishing in the top four of their respective conferences.

Minnesota United fans looking forward to Lionel Messi and Inter Miami coming to Allianz Field are left hoping for a League's Cup date after the league left Miami off Minnesota's schedule this season. Minnesota and Miami have faced each other just once since Miami entered the league in 2020, a 2-1 Miami win in June 2022.

Defending Western Conference champions LAFC visit Allianz Field March 16 with the Loons traveling to take on the L.A. side May 29.

Minnesota will once again play Sporting KC three times, hosting the side that ended their hopes of making the 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs on April 27 and June 1, with a trip down to Kansas City set for Sept. 21. Minnesota have never won in Kansas City.

The Loons will close out their regular season schedule on Decision Day against St. Louis on Oct. 19. Saint Louis finished with the best record in the Western Conference in 2023, which was their inaugural season.
