Will Kevin Garnett get involved with new Wolves-Lynx ownership group?
There is growing speculation that Kevin Garnett could become involved with the new Timberwolves and Lynx ownership group led by former MLB All-Star Alex Rodriguez and former Walmart executive Mark Lore.
Not only did Garnett, during his Hall of Fame speech Saturday night, say he's looking forward to "rebuilding" Minneapolis, but Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press writes that there is "buzz" that Rodriguez "intends to bring" Garnett "in as an investor of the Wolves and Lynx.
Rodriguez and Lore purchased the Wolves and Lynx from billionaire Glen Taylor for an estimated $1.5 billion. Taylor purchased the Timberwolves in 1994, ensuring at the time that he would keep the team in Minnesota. He told the Star Tribune last month that his deal with Rodriguez and Lore also ensures the team stays in Minnesota.
The big question now is if Garnett's choice of words – twice saying he's looking forward to rebuilding Minneapolis – are an indication that he'll get involved with Rodriguez and Lore.
“To the city of Minneapolis, I look forward to rebuilding you," Garnett said. “My only real regret with Minnesota is that I didn’t get to bring a championship, but I look forward to rebuilding Minneapolis, and I wanted to thank the city and the state. Thank you, Minnesota.”
When Taylor announced he was selling the Timberwolves in July 2020, Garnett put together a group to potentially buy the franchise. In March, the Hall of Famer explained in and Instagram post that his group was "going to focus on other things."
"Just got the news that this process in trying to acquire the TWOLVES IS OVER for me n my group," Garnett said. "Thx [Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor] for being yourself and what I Kno you to be!! GOOD LUCK n aww the best with WHAT WE BUILT! GUESS ITS TIME FOCUS ON OTHER PLACES!"
