Byron Buxton's chances of returning this season appear to have taken a step back.

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told media Friday that Buxton's rehab remain paused after tendinitis flared up in his right knee just two games into his rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul.

The 29-year old outfielder was originally sidelined in early August with a hamstring injury. Buxton last played a game for the Twins August 1 but was strictly a designated hitter in 2023, having not played a game in the outfield for the Twins since last August.

While Buxton's rehab has still not resumed, Baldelli said he's moving better than a few days ago, adding: "We’re anticipating him working his way back and taking the field for us."

Buxton played seven innings in the outfield in his first game of his rehab assignment with his second game getting cut short after two designated hitter at bats.

Minnesota are currently have a 6.5 game lead in the AL Central ahead of a three-game weekend series hosting the New York Mets.

The Star Tribune reported that Buxton was due to have a meeting with Twins leaders on Friday to discuss his health with the Twins quickly approaching the playoffs.

Buxton was slashing .207/.294/.438 with 17 home runs and 42 RBI before his departure in August.

In a move made Friday, the Twins added Joey Gallo to the injured list with a foot contusion, and added Alex Kirilloff – who is returning from injury – as his replacement.
