Twins' bullpen implodes in loss to Tigers
The Minnesota Twins saw its bullpen implode on Sunday afternoon as they raced out to a 6-2 lead, but wound up losing 10-8 to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
The Twins got off to a rocky start when Twins starter Rich Hill allowed an RBI single to Travis Demeritte in the first inning and a solo home run to Sergio Alcantara in the second inning to put Minnesota in a 2-0 hole.
But the Twins fired back with six unanswered runs beginning with a two-run single from Willians Astudillo in the third inning.
The Twins took the lead with three runs in the fifth inning which included RBI doubles from Luis Arraez and Brent Rooker and Jake Cave added an RBI single to give the Twins a 6-2 lead.
Although Hill settled down after a rocky start, the Twins bullpen couldn't hold onto the four-run lead. Trevor May quickly gave up three runs including a two-run homer from Willi Castro in the sixth inning but Eddie Rosario got a run back with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
The Tigers didn't go away, however as they scored a pair of runs to tie the game off Tyler Duffey in the seventh and took the lead on a Grayson Greiner home run off Sergio Romo in the eighth.
Detroit scored another pair of runs off Devin Smeltzer and although Rosario chipped into the lead with his ninth home run of the season in the eighth, the Twins were in too big of a hole and saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.
The Twins (25-17) will wrap up a four-game series with the Tigers on Monday afternoon when they send Michael Pineda to the mound opposite Michael Fulmer.
