Red Sox sweep Twins in Wednesday's doubleheader
The Minnesota Twins are on a five-game losing streak after losing both games of a doubleheader with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday afternoon.
The Twins had their ace on the mound in the first game with Kenta Maeda taking the hill for the Twins. The Red Sox were able to get to Maeda in the second inning as Hunter Renfroe started the scoring with an RBI single to score Marwin Gonzalez.
Maeda cost himself a run on a throwing error that allowed Renfroe to score later in the inning and Christian Arroyo added an RBI single to put Boston ahead 3-0.
Jorge Polanco cut into the lead with an RBI single that scored Ryan Jeffers and J.T. Riddle in the third inning but it was all the offense the Twins could find in Game 1.
The Twins got Jake Cave into scoring position in the top of the seventh but a screaming liner from Miguel Sano went just foul and another liner off the bat of Luis Arraez was caught by a diving Alex Verdugo to help Boston take the opener by a score of 3-2.
The second game got off to a better start with José Berríos on the mound for the Twins. Josh Donaldson made his return to the lineup with a single in the first inning and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Kyle Garlick to give Minnesota an early lead.
Berríos made sure the lead held up early, throwing four shutout innings against the Red Sox before trouble struck in the fifth. Boston loaded up the bases against Berríos before Franchy Cordero drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game.
Tyler Duffey came in for the Twins but couldn't keep the Sox off the board. Verdugo plated two runs with an RBI single and Cordero scored on a wild pitch to give Boston a 4-1 lead. The Red Sox capped off a five-run inning with a two-RBI single by Devers.
Verdugo added an insurance run with a home run in the seventh inning and the Red Sox completed the sweep with a 7-1 victory.
The Twins fell to 5-6 after the doubleheader and will close out their series with the Sox on Thursday afternoon.
