Report: Jefferson wants to know Vikings QB plan before signing extension

Minnesota is hoping to re-sign Kirk Cousins.

Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson made news when he told Adam Schein on Sirius XM that he wanted to “break the bank” when he signs a looming contract extension. Jefferson may have another stipulation before he signs on the dotted line.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafolo, Jefferson might be waiting to sign his extension until the Vikings sort out their quarterback situation. NFL Network reported that Jefferson is a fan of quarterback Kirk Cousins and “will want to know the quarterback plan before signing on for the long haul.”

The Vikings are hoping to re-sign Cousins, according to the report, but the market for the 36-year-old quarterback in free agency is expected to be quite strong despite Cousins coming off a season-ending torn Achilles tendon.

If the Vikings are unable to re-sign Cousins, they are likely to pursue a cheaper veteran, and NFL Network floated Sam Darnold as a quarterback who would make sense for Minnesota. The Vikings could also draft a quarterback with the No. 11 pick or trade up for the QB of the future while also signing a veteran as a short-term option.

Another thing the Vikings have to consider is what to do with edge rusher Danielle Hunter. He's also a free agent, and there doesn't appear to be a feasible way to re-sign both Cousins and Hunter and extend Jefferson.

It’ll truly be a pivotal offseason for the Vikings.
