According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, the Vikings and Dolphins nearly completed the long-mooted Dalvin Cook trade back in March.

"Minnesota and Miami came very close to a trade that would've made Cook a Dolphin back in March," Breer writes in his latest column.

No details were offered on what the deal was or even why the trade fell apart.

Breer also notes that the Vikings looked at using Cook more sparingly, as a change of pace compliment to Alexander Mattison, if they were able to bring him back on a smaller contract.

The Vikings don't necessarily need to move on from Cook but with big extensions for Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson likely in the future it appears a decision on the running back is coming sooner rather than later.

Minnesota can open up $11 million in cap space with a Cook trade while taking on $3.1 million dead cap hit this season.
