A high school athlete and college football recruit was shot and killed over the weekend, Harris Co. (Tex.) authorities said.

Jarvon Coles was reportedly identified as the victim of a shooting after being discovered unresponsive on Saturday in Humble, an area near Houston, Harris Co. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a statement.

Coles was 18 years old, and reportedly planned on starting his college football career at Lamar University in Beaumont, Tex.

Paramedics discovered an 18-year-old man at the scene when they arrived, and initially believed that he had passed out. But they later determined he had been shot and took him to a local hospital, where he later died of the injuries.

Police initially stated that one or two shooters had open fired from about a block away, shooting towards a house and struck Coles in the barrage.

The shooters fled in a vehicle.

North Shore assistant coach Kyle Herridge reacted to the death of Coles.

"You cannot measure the impact he had on and off the field in our program," he said. "Truly an incredible human being. Prayers needed for his family, our student athletes, our staff, and the entire North Shore community. Rest easy Jarvon Coles."

Coles played linebacker and was named an All-District First-Team player during the 2023 season, helping North Shore finish 15-1 last year.

His school finished No. 7 nationally in MaxPreps' high school football rankings.
