Notre Dame changes football fight song after more than a century

Going forward, the Notre Dame football fight song will include the school's "daughters" as well as its sons.
Notre Dame president Rev. John Jenkins announced that the Notre Dame Victory March will slightly change its lyrics ahead of the 2022 football season.
The tune, which is synonymous with the Fighting Irish football tradition, made the minor change to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX.
The old lyric: "While her loyal sons are marching/Onward to victory."
The new lyric: "While her loyal sons and daughters/March on to victory."
The original lyrics to the fight song were written when Notre Dame was a men's only college; the school admitted women for the first time in 1972.
Women's sports on campus followed in 1976, originally with tennis and fencing. The school now has 12 women's sports.
Notre Dame originally debuted the song in 1909, and it's been played on campus regularly since 1919. Band director Joseph Casasanta rearranged the song in 1928 to the version that has been played ever since.
And now, the school has made another change to play into the future.
