Miami Marlins, Washington Nationals Make Modern Era Baseball History with Huge Comeback Wins

The Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals had huge comeback wins on Sunday and made some Modern Era baseball history.

The Washington Nationals and Miami Marlins made some baseball history on Sunday with comeback victories against the Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees, respectively.

Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:

Today marks the first time in the modern era that two MLB teams (@Marlins@Nationals) trailed by 4+ runs in the 9th and came back to win without needing extras on the same day.

The Nationals trailed 7-2 entering the ninth inning and scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth, capped off by a walk-off single from newcomer Jeter Downs. The final score was 8-7.

As for the Marlins, they trailed 7-3 entering the ninth inning before scoring five runs in the bottom of the ninth to win 8-7 as well. They got four earned runs off Yankees closer Clay Holmes in the frame, with the game-winner coming from an RBI single off the bat of the newly-acquired Jake Burger.

The win was monumental for Miami, who is trying to make its first postseason since the COVID-shortened 2020 season. They are now 62-57 on the season and hold the third and final wild card spot in the National League, as of this posting.

The loss was a difficult one for the Yankees, as it dropped them to 60-58. They are 5.0 games back of the final wild card spot in the American League.

The game was less meaningful for the Nats-A's. Washington is now 53-66 and has won seven of their last 10 games. Oakland is a league-worst 33-85 on the year.
