The Pittsburgh Pirates Remain the Leaders in Offbeat Statistical History

The Pittsburgh Pirates continue to make random baseball history in the 2023 season.

It's becoming comical at this point just how much random history the Pittsburgh Pirates account for.

We've discussed some of it here. And more of it here. And the Pirates accomplished even more of it in Saturday's 7-6 win against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:

Since RBI became an official stat in 1920, the Pirates had never had a game where they scored 7+ runs with all of them driven in by rookies... until last night -- Sam Hovland,

@OptaSTATS

The Pirates got four RBI from top prospect Endy Rodriguez and another three from second baseman Liover Peguero in the win.

It's been a disappointing last two months for the Pirates, who started out as one of the best stories in baseball this year. They've fallen way back in the standings, but it is nice to see the young kids contributing in the back half of the season.

Pittsburgh is now 46-58 on the season and 10.5 games back in the National League Central. They are 1.0 game up on the Cardinals for fourth place and could end up selling more pieces at the looming trade deadline. The team has already dealt veteran slugger and leader Carlos Santana to the Milwaukee Brewers. Veteran lefty Rich Hill has gotten some interest, as has closer David Bednar.

They'll take on the Phillies again on Sunday afternoon as Hill pitches against Christopher Sanchez.

First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m. ET and the Pirates will be off on Monday. They'll play the Tigers on Tuesday.
