Cincinnati Reds' Martini Joins Slim Group in Organizational History with Opening Day Blasts

Nick Martini hit two home runs as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Washington Nationals on Thursday, becoming the fourth player in team history to hit two homers on Opening Day.

The Cincinnati Reds pounded the Washington Nationals, 8-2, on Opening Day to move to 1-0 on the season.

It was a great start for a Reds team that has high expectations entering 2024. With some of the best young talent in all of baseball, the team is primed to make the playoffs for the first time since the COVID 2020 season.

Cincy was powered by 33-year-old Nick Martini in the opener, as he went 2-for-4 with five RBI in the victory, all while hitting out of the No. 8 spot in the order. Martini popped two home runs in the win, joining a select group in team history.

Martini has lived an interesting baseball life, never serving as a regular on a roster. He made his major league debut for the 2018 Oakland Athletics and played 55 games that year, which is the most of any season in his career. He appeared in games for the A's and San Diego Padres in 2019, and the Chicago Cubs in 2021. He then played 29 games for the Reds a season ago and is trying to establish himself as a more regular part of the roster this season.

Lifetime, he's a .268 hitter (entering Thursday). He now has 10 career home runs.

The Reds and Nationals will be off on Friday before reconvening on Saturday afternoon. First pitch from Great American Ball Park is 4:10 p.m. ET.
