Recapping the Full Results of MLB's 2023 Rule 5 Draft
With the Winter Meetings winding down, MLB clubs came together in Nashville for one of the week's final major events – the Rule 5 Draft.
The Rule 5 Draft allows teams to claim players who were left off of other teams' 40-man rosters earlier this offseason.
During the Major League Phase, teams have to pay $100K to select a player, but the players will be reverted to their previous team if they don't stay in the big leagues for the entire 2024 season. The ensuing Minor League Phase does not have said restrictions.
After finishing with the worst record in the league, the Oakland Athletics had the No. 1 overall pick and selected right-handed pitcher Mitch Spence out of the New York Yankees' system. The Kansas City Royals also poached a Yankees pitcher, taking right-hander Matt Sauer No. 2 overall.
