San Diego Padres Rewrite History Books with Epic Comeback on Monday

The San Diego Padres were down 8-0 on Monday night against the Chicago Cubs before coming back to win, delivering a history-making performance at PetCo Park.

The San Diego Padres came-from-behind in epic fashion on Monday night to stun the Chicago Cubs, 9-8, at PetCo Park.

The Padres were down 8-0 in the game, scoring seven runs in the sixth inning and two in the eighth to complete the comeback. Fernando Tatis hit the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the eighth to send the place into a frenzy.

The comeback also represents the re-writing of the Padres' history books, per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

8 runs ties the largest comeback win in Padres history, joining:

7/8/21 vs Nationals (Daniel Camarena game!)
6/10/74 vs Pirates
5/23/70 at Giants

Tatis Jr. was 1-for-4 on the night but had the two crucial RBI and Xander Bogaerts, Jake Cronenworth and Ha-Seong Kim also had multi-RBI performances. The win moved the Padres to 6-7 on the season and the loss dropped the Cubs to 6-4.

San Diego entered the 2023 season with massive expectations and fell short, missing the playoffs entirely, so perhaps this team, without as much pressure, will be able to play loose and overachieve in a very deep and talented National League West.

Yu Darvish struggled on the mound, allowing four earned runs on four hits and three walks over just 3.0 innings. Wandy Peralta ended up getting the win by working a scoreless eighth. Robert Suarez worked the ninth for the save.

The Cubs and Padres will play again on Tuesday night at 10:05 p.m. ET. Ben Brown (0-0, 11.12 ERA) pitches for Chicago while Joe Musgrove (1-1, 6.28 ERA) pitches for the Padres.
