Los Angeles Lakers Reportedly Hire 11-Year NBA Veteran

According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, the Los Angeles Lakers are hiring 11-year NBA veteran DeMarre Carroll to be an assistant coach.

On Friday evening, NBA free agency began, and there have been many reported moves made around the league.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been one of the most active teams and have done an excellent job at retaining their own free agents and signing new players.

On Monday afternoon, ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported that head coach Darvin Ham is making an addition to his coaching staff.

Via McMenamin: "The Lakers are hiring DeMarre Carroll as an asst coach on Darvin Ham's staff, sources told ESPN. Carroll worked for Mike Budenholzer in MIL last season. Ham, Carroll and Bud were all in Atlanta together when ATL went 60-22 w/ Carroll as the starting SF and was No. 1 in the East"

Carroll most recently played in the NBA during the 2020 season when he was on the San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets.

In addition to those teams, he has also played for the Denver Nuggets, Memphis Grizzlies, Utah Jazz, Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks.

The 36-year-old was a solid role player and had averages of 8.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per contest while shooting 43.0% from the field and 35.8% from the three-point range over 578 regular season games (he also appeared in 64 NBA Playoff games).

As for the Lakers, they are coming off a season where they were the seventh seed in the Western Conference and had a 43-39 record.

They beat the Memphis Grizzlies and Golden State Warriors through the first two rounds of the NBA Playoffs but were swept by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals.
