152nd Silver Spurs Kicks Off Florida Winter Rodeos with $175K Payout

The Silver Spurs Rodeo in Osceola County, Fla., is a community pride, supporting local non-profits and offering large payouts to its contestants. Spanning four days with payouts of around $175,000, it is a major stop for athletes on their winter run.

Back in 1941, “when cattle and oranges were King” in Osceola County, Fla., a group of ranchers got together and decided to have a rodeo, and thus the Silver Spurs Riding Club was born. It wasn’t until 1950, however, that the club gained its partnership with the PRCA, and on July 4, the first sanctioned rodeo was held at their new fairgrounds in Kissimmee.

Since then, there have been some major updates to the fairgrounds, including a climate-controlled arena that holds over 8,000 seats. Thanks to the efforts of many throughout the years, the Silver Spurs Rodeo has become the largest rodeo east of the Mississippi River and is ranked among the top 50 rodeos sanctioned by the PRCA each year.

Beyond providing quality entertainment for the spectators, the rodeo’s mission is to serve and provide unity within the community. The committee goes above and beyond to raise money for local non-profit organizations and gives away multiple scholarships throughout the event. In addition, the Silver Spurs holds a “Special Rodeo” every year so local youth and special needs children can experience the thrill of rodeo.

This mid-winter rodeo marks the beginning of many, where athletes from all over escape the cold at home to rodeo in sunny Florida for a few weeks and add some cushion to their place in the world standings. Many make the trip, but only some will leave victorious.

Jamie Olsen, of Brock, Texas, has proved to have a very profitable start to her Florida run. Olsen and her Frenchman’s Guy daughter, Any Guy of Mine, won not only Kissimmee with a blazing 15.63-second run but also Okeechobee, Fla., adding nearly $8,500 to their earnings this weekend.

All-around cowboy Jobe Johns was on fire, taking top honors in the tie-down roping with a 7.7-second run, earning him $4,834 for his efforts. Johns then went on to take the win in the team roping, second in the tie-down and secured the all-around title yet again at Okeechobee. The Zolfo Springs, Fla., talent did not have to travel far for a payday and took home a little over $9,000 between his two events.

No. 12 in the World, bareback rider Ethan Crouch came from Texas to defend his place in the standings, and the trip was more than worthwhile. Crouch took the win at both Kissimmee (83.5 points on Silver Spurs Club’s Nina) and Okeechobee (87 points on JC Kitaif ProRodeos' Dragon Breath), winning close to $7,000 for his efforts.
