There was not a happier rodeo contestant at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on Thursday night than Brody Yeary, who lives just an hour from Dickies Arena at Morgan Mill.

Yeary has been riding bulls in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association since 2016. He has won big rodeos before and has finished inside the top 30 in the world standings twice. But he has never won the rodeo in Fort Worth, and it is one that he has been attending and dreaming of winning since he was a child.

He came one step closer to getting the coveted buckle here on Thursday night when he finished at the top of the leaderboard in the first round of Bracket 5. He was one of four bull riders who made qualified rides and finished at the top with an 86.5-point score on Dakota Rodeo’s bull named Yellowstone.

That eight-second ride earned him $2,000 and put him in a great position to qualify for the Semi-Finals. The part-time youth pastor will have his second opportunity here on Friday and is hoping to add to his earnings.

Thursday night’s crowd also got to see one of the most exciting bareback rides at the FWSSR ProRodeo Tournament so far. Utah’s Bronc Marriot, who is gunning for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification, scored 87 points on Andrews Rodeo’s Empty Promises. Marriott did everything he could to match moves with the horse, who ducked left and right and nearly dropped out from underneath the cowboy.

Kalane Anders from Bayard, Neb., is also looking for the biggest win of his career. Anders stopped the clock in 3.4 seconds in the steer wrestling for the first-round win. That is the fastest run of this year’s rodeo so far. Anders has been a member of the PRCA since 2017, and a win here could be the push he needs to qualify for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Bracket 5 will be completed at the Friday matinee performance, which begins at 2 p.m. A whole new group of contestants will compete in the first round of Bracket 6, which starts at 7:30 on Friday evening.
