After surpassing $2 million in 2023 at the Farm Credit Services of America Horse Sale, the stage is set for the sale to reach or top that standard in 2024. The Black Hills Stock Show Farm Credit Services of America Horse Sale will be held Friday, Jan. 26, and Saturday, Jan. 27, in Rapid City, S.D.

The two-day sale will feature a total of 212 consigned horses. Day one kicks off with 107 horses representing prestigious bloodlines like Hashtags, Hottish, and Dual Rey. On day two, 105 horses will strut through the ring. The catalog comprises 130 geldings, 54 mares, 20 stallions, and eight ponies and pony crosses.

Last year at the sale, the high-selling lot was a stallion, Hashtag You’re It, which sold for $70,000 to buyer Kaylee Hieronimus of Ashton, Iowa. The highest-selling gelding, Bea Mega Cat, went for $51,000. George Fisher purchased the mare Please Me One Time for $55,000. They had a total of 158 lots sold in 2023, consisting of 2 stallions, 120 geldings and 36 mares. The average price was $16,791, but the grand total brought in was $2,653,000, setting the bar for the 2024 sale extremely high.

In the past three years or so, the horse market has skyrocketed and hasn’t come down since. This brought abnormally high prices, but the silver lining is the crosses of remarkable pedigree. The horse industry is building a more versatile, reliant horse all the time, which is excellent news.

Whether buyers seek a dependable workhorse for the ranch or yearning for a trusty equine companion, the Black Hill Stock Show Horse Sale is the place to be the last weekend in January.

The sale will be live-streamed on Superior Livestock. Buyers also have the opportunity to bid online through that platform.
