Hawaiian Cowboy Kala'i Nobriga and 'Betty Blu' Deliver Dominating Performance at Royal Crown Futurity
Hawaiian cowboy Kala'i Nobriga emerged as a standout competitor at the Royal Crown Breakaway and Calf Roping futurities held at Arizona's Buckeye Equestrian Center on Monday, Feb. 12. The event, featuring the 4 & Under, 6 & Under, and All Ages categories showcased skilled ropers alongside promising young horses.
Nobriga, a horse trainer, and PRCA ProRodeo tie-down roper delivered a dominating performance with his 2019 mare, Betty Blu, sired by Royal Crown Stallion Once In A Blu Boon out of Maneater by TR Dasher.
Accumulating a total score of 374.10 points, Nobriga and Betty Blu secured $5,300, while Once in A Blue Boon earned $660, and breeder Wayne Shizuru received $440. The collective earnings for the mare's first trip to town amounted to $6,400.
"This is actually the first thing I've ever taken her to other than the home arena," Nobriga shared. "She stayed real calm, and she felt like everything was sharp behind me when I left; nothing felt out of whack. So I felt like it was good."
Nobriga also shed light on the mare's origin, stating, "A friend of mine, Wayne Shizuru from Hawaii, who bred her, asked me one time what I'd want to breed one of their race mares to, and I told him I really like Once In A Blue Boon. They bred that mare [Maneater] to Once In A Blue Boon, and when she was two, they called me and said, 'You got to come get your horse.'"
