Breaking Down the StockX Quarterly Trend Report

On Wednesday morning, consumers were treated to the latest quarterly trend report from the current culture marketplace, StockX. The online platform highlighted the products that shaped the resale market and set new records in 2023. The report – Big Facts: 2023 Trends – also explores search term data ahead of the holiday season and the specific brands, collaborations, and sneaker silhouettes that saw significant year-over-year spikes on StockX.
"Consumers are eager to diversify their closets and discover new brands – throughout 2023, we’ve seen more and more new entrants compete for share of wallet," said StockX CEO Scott Cutler.
"The growing desire among young consumers to be early adopters has fueled interest in emerging labels and helped bolster demand for new sneaker silhouettes. While we’ve seen price premiums soften on releases from some of the top brands, players like New Balance and adidas are successfully tapping into consumers’ hunger for something different by launching new silhouettes or putting a fresh spin on retired classics."
5 Takeaways From StockX Report
Listing the five biggest takeaways from StockX's quarterly report.
Retro Sneakers Most Wished For
StockX Lists is a new feature that gives users the ability to curate lists of the products they want to share with family and friends. In just over a month, StockX users have made more than 500,000 adds to StockX Lists.
Early data shows that retro models such as Air Jordan 4s, Air Jordan 1s, and Nike Dunks rank among the most-requested sneakers, while hoodies from Fear of God’s Essentials line lead the apparel category.
Travis Scott's Popularity
The quarterly report also reveals this year's standout sneaker collaborations, based on the 2023 releases with the highest average price premiums on StockX. Recording artist Travis Scott's collaborations took the top two spots on the list.
The Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Retro Low Golf 'Neutral Olive' topped the list with an average price premium of 397%. Meanwhile, the Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Retro Low OG SP 'Olive,' which was a women's exclusive release, took the second spot with an average price premium of 342%.
Kobe Bryant Buzz
It is no secret that athletes and fans have been starved for sneaker releases from the signature line of Kobe Bryant. Over the past three and half years, Nike has released Bryant's retro sneakers sparingly.
However, Nike officially relaunched the "Kobe Brand" in August with the Nike Kobe 8 Protro 'Halo' release. According to the StockX report, searches for the term "Nike Kobe 8 Protro" increased 5,602% year-over-year.
Giannis Antetokounmpo's Impact
The NBA is a global game, and perhaps no player exemplifies the best qualities of the sport like Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo. In addition to being a perennial NBA All-Star, the "Greek Freak" is building a strong sneaker legacy with Nike.
According to StockX's report, searches for the "Nike Zoom Freak 5" have increased 7,058% year-over-year. Antetokounmpo's fifth signature sneaker was released in July 2023 and appears to be hitting its stride just in time for the holiday season.
Ja Morant's Fanbase
The rollout of the signature sneaker line of Ja Morant has been anything but smooth. Nike had to delay the release and reportedly alter colorways at the last moment due to Morant's multiple suspensions. Nevertheless, Morant's fanbase remains more loyal than ever.
An interesting fact that did not make StockX's report is that searches for the "Nike Ja 1" have increased 197,466%. This incredible rise makes it the second-fastest growing search term overall on StockX.
