The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that California schools will likely close for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year due to coronavirus concerns.

The Chronicle obtained a letter sent Tuesday by the state superintendent to school officials across the state. The letter, written by California's State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, included the following sentence: "Due to the current safety concerns and needs for ongoing social distancing it currently appears that our students will not be able to return to school campuses before the end of the school year."

The CIF state office is expected to make an announcement on the status of the California high school spring sports season on Friday.
