MHSAA Class 6A All-Sports Awards: Madison Central enjoys special year, Ocean Springs turns heads with success

Madison Central High School won four state championships to take hold down the top spot in the Class 6A All-Sports Awards for 2021-2022

JACKSON — With the 2021-2022 athletic year in the rearview mirror, it's time to take a look at the athletic programs from across the state which enjoyed the most success.

The All-Sports Awards are based on a formula that awards a certain point total for each measure of success in an individual sport. For team sports with a post-season, for example, a program will get points for putting a team into the playoffs, and then additional points for each round that team reaches.

For ranked sports, such as powerlifting or cross country, the team that wins the state championship receives the most points, the runner-up the second-most, and so on.

So without further ado, here's a look at the All-Sports Awards for the 2021-2022 athletic season for the MHSAA's Class 6A.

1. Madison Central - 297.5

Championships: Girls Swimming, Boys Swimming, Football, Tennis

The Jaguars took care of business in the fall, taking the Class III Championships in boys and girls swimming and beating Brandon in the State Football Championship. That helped them build a huge lead they held throughout the year, and the tennis championship put the MC over the top.

2. Ocean Springs - 270

Championships: Girls Cross Country, Girls Golf

The Greyhounds were competitive pretty much across the board. Ocean Springs made the playoffs in just about everything, but reached the state semifinals in volleyball and girls soccer and finished runner-up in girls powerlifting and tennis.

T3. Northwest Rankin - 245

Championships: Girls Soccer, Baseball

The Cougars are one of two teams in the top five that did not make the playoffs in football, but they made up for the slow start with strong finishes in boys and girls bowling, boys and girls soccer and finished with a strong spring slate by reaching the state semifinals in softball and winning the 6A baseball title for the third time in school history.

T3. Tupelo - 245

Championships: Boys Golf

The Golden Wave got off to a hot start in the fall with typically strong runs in boys and girls swimming and finished runner-up in boys’ cross country. Tupelo was one of only a handful of schools to earn points in at least 15 out of 22 possible sports.

T3. Clinton - 245

Championships: Boys Soccer, Boys Basketball, Girls Track, Boys Track

It’s not hard to figure out how Clinton sneaked into the top 3 — four state championships in one year will do that for you. But the Arrows also finished runner-up in girls soccer and boys bowling, reached the semifinal round in girls basketball and finished third in girls powerlifting.

The best of the rest: Oxford (225), D’Iberville (197.5), Pearl (177.5), Brandon (162.5).
