Ridgefield High School senior Trey Knight, a four-time throwing state champion, signed with University of Southern California for Track & Field this week, the college announced on Tuesday.

The two-time Gatorade Washington state boys track athlete of the year won two 2A state titles in the discus and two in shot put, though his best event — the hammer throw — is not offered by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

He set a meet record for the discus last spring when he hit a 187 feet, 6 inch mark to repeat as 2A state champion.

Knight notched the fifth-best recorded high school hammer throw of all time, a 260-05 mark, in July, according to throws statistician Bob Gourley. He told Scorebook Live in August that he has his eyes set on the 2024 Toyko Outdoor Olympics after collegiate career.

Knight comes from a familiar line of throwers.

His mother Heather Knight and cousin Jon Lawson were also state champion throwers at Battle Ground and Prairie High School.

At Ridgefield, the senior had been exclusively a track athlete until he decided to go out for football this fall for his senior season, and earned first team all-2A Greater St. Helens league honors as a defensive lineman. The Spudders made their first state playoff appearance since 2005.

The national early signing period for college sports at all levels began on Nov. 13 and will last until August 2020 for track and field.
