D-Backs INF Pennington out 6-8 weeks, thumb injury

PHOENIX (AP) Add Cliff Pennington to the long list of injured players on the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Manager Kirk Gibson says Pennington has a torn ligament in his left thumb that will require surgery. The infielder is expected to be out for six to eight weeks.

Pennington went on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and the Diamondbacks recalled infielder Didi Gregorius from Triple-A Reno.

Gregorius was with the Diamondbacks all of last season but lost the starting shortstop job to rookie Chris Owings in spring training. He was hitting .310 with 14 doubles, three home runs and 42 runs scored in 57 games with Reno.

Gregorius started 38 games at second base and 19 at shortstop for the Aces.

On Monday, outfielder A.J. Pollock underwent surgery to repair a fractured right hand.
