Watch: Mike Trout, Coco Crisp, Yoenis Cespedes show off on defense
Angels vs. Athletics: Come for the AL West showdown, stay for the stupidly good defense. Just one night after Yoenis Cespedes' jaw-dropping throw home from left field to nail Howie Kendrick at the plate, the pair of Coco Crisp and Mike Trout showed off their skills in the outfield on a pair of home-run robbing grabs, only to have Cespedes and his cannon of an arm steal the show once again.
First up was Trout, who gave Cespedes a taste of what it's like to be on the receiving end of a defensive gem. With two outs in the top of the first, Cespedes took a Jered Weaver offering and drove it to left-center. But Trout was ready. Backing up to the fence, Trout timed his leap perfectly and snatched Cespedes' homer bid from just over the wall, denying him extra bases and keeping the game scoreless.
Not to be outdone, Crisp pulled the same trick on Josh Hamilton in the bottom of the second, snatching his ball from a foot over the center field fence and bringing it back in. He even got a quick troll in on the Angels' fireworks operator, giving a Dikembe Mutumbo-style finger wag after the pyrotechnics mistakenly went off on Hamilton's drive.
Then Cespedes joined the fun. Proving that the Angels learned absolutely nothing on Tuesday night, Albert Pujols ripped a line drive to left in the sixth inning off Tommy Milone, a ball that, just like Kendrick's from the night before, initially got away from Cespedes. That's where Pujols got greedy, trying to stretch his double into a triple. Bad idea. That's where Cespedes struck, firing an absolute laser to third base to get Pujols easily for the inning's second out.
For those of us who love crazy defense, the Angels and Athletics won't meet again until August 28, a series that will no doubt be straining the Internet's ability to make GIFs as much as this one.
