MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Minnesota Twins reinstated third baseman Trevor Plouffe and utilityman Eduardo Nunez from the disabled list Monday, putting both of them right back in the lineup for the series opener against Kansas City.
Plouffe and Nunez each missed 14 games after their injuries June 14 at Detroit. Plouffe hurt his rib cage, and Nunez, who played in four games on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Rochester, strained his right hamstring. Manager Ron Gardenhire had Plouffe batting sixth and Nunez hitting eighth as the shortstop against the Royals at Target Field.
''Definitely will have some fresh hands,'' Gardenhire said. ''We'll see. It's just a timing thing now.''
To make room on the roster, shortstops Pedro Florimon and Jorge Polanco were sent to the minors: Florimon to Triple-A Rochester and Polanco to Class A Fort Myers.
Florimon went 0 for 11 in eight games since he was called up, dropping his career average to .204 in 624 major league at-bats.
Polanco went 2 for 5 over four games after making his surprise major league debut with the Twins temporarily short-handed in the field.
''That's exciting to see young players like that get a chance to come up here, kind of forced into action and handle themselves very well,'' Gardenhire said. ''Our system's doing a really nice job with these guys.''
