Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder soreness, the team announced Tuesday.

The move is retroactive to June 25. Escobar left the Rays' game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 24 with soreness in his shoulder, and has not played since. The Rays had been playing short-handed for a few games but finally made the move to put Escobar on the DL after he did not appear ready to play during a pre-game workout on Monday, reports Rotoworld.

Ben Zobrist, a second baseman who has been starting in Escobar's place at shortstop, is expected to continue to do so. The Rays have not yet announced who will replace Escobar on the roster in the interim.

Escobar is hitting .244 with four home runs and 22 RBI this season.
