NEW YORK (AP) Umpire Gary Darling has decided to retire after a 28-year major league career that included two World Series.

The 56-year-old Darling has been on the disabled list for the entire season. He officially joined the National League staff in 1988 and became a crew chief before the 2004 season.

Darling was a part of the World Series in 2003 and 2010. The San Francisco native also worked All-Star games in 1993 and 2003.

Major League Baseball also announced Friday that Quinn Wolcott had been appointed to the full-time umpiring staff. The 28-year-old Wolcott had been working at the Triple-A level since 2011.
