Saturday July 26th, 2014

The Cardinals, looking to upgrade at catcher after Yadier Molina's thumb injury, are working to sign veteran free agent A.J. Pierzynski, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Friday night.

The Red Sox released the 37-year-old Pierzynski earlier this month after he hit .254 with four homers and 31 RBIs in 72 games this season.

Molina is expected to be out 6-10 weeks following surgery on a torn thumb ligament. The Cardinals have been using the platoon of Tony Cruz and George Kottaras at catcher.

Pierzynski, a two-time All-Star, has 176 career home runs in 17 seasons for the Twins, Giants, White Sox, Rangers and Red Sox. He won the World Series in 2005 with Chicago.
