Angels outfielder Mickey Moniak spoke to reporters on Friday about his back, and didn't exactly have the most promising update.

Moniak, who was expected to return on Friday, said he's hopeful to return this season, but hasn't even started baseball activities yet. That alludes to the fact that he isn't even close to returning to game action, meaning it would make sense for him to go on the injured list.

However, Moniak, who hasn't played since September 5, remains on the active roster, and the reason is pretty obvious. Angels owner Arte Moreno is trying to save every last dollar everywhere he can, and by keeping Moniak on the roster, he doesn't have to pay another player who's currently in Triple-A.

On Thursday, the Angels randomly called up David Fletcher and Jared Walsh, and those moves, too, were completely financially motivated.

The Angels were paying Fletcher and Walsh major league contracts no matter what, so rather than pay them and rookies Jordyn Adams and Kyren Paris, they now only have to pay Fletcher and Walsh. That saves them a little over $100 thousand.
