The Cleveland Guardians announced Saturday Andrés Giménez will start at second base for the American League in the 2022 All-Star Game. José Altuve — who was selected to start — was replaced on the roster by Toronto Blue Jays' Santiago Espinal.

Altuve was scheduled for an off day Friday before leaving Thursday's game after the first inning with a contusion. The 32-year-old took a Reid Detmers' first-pitch slider off his front knee and was replaced by Mauricio Dubón in the bottom half of the inning.

The Houston Astros haven't placed Altuve on the injured list but have listed him day-to-day. In the month of July, the second baseman is slashing .350/.481/.600 with two home runs, 10 walks and seven RBI in 40 at-bats.

The Astros are now down two All-Stars as Yordan Álvarez — who is on the 10-day injured list with right-hand inflammation — was replaced by J.D. Martinez on Tuesday. Saturday's starter, Justin Verlander, is also unlikely to appear in Tuesday's Summer Classic, leaving Kyle Tucker and Framber Valdez as the lone options to represent Houston.
