Ronald Acuña Jr named NL Player of the Month for April

The outfielder led all of baseball in stolen bases and runs as he aims for an MVP

Major League Baseball announced that Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr has won the NL Player of the Month award for April.

Acuña, 25, has come into 2023 on an absolute mission, leading MLB in both steals (14) and runs (26) and the National League in hits (42), doubles (11), and total bases (68) as of Wednesday morning.

For the month of April, he finished with a .352/.440/.546 slash line, leading all of baseball with 23 runs and 13 stolen bases, as well as contributing four home runs, nine doubles, and 38 hits in 27 games.

Returning from a torn ACL, suffered in 2021, he didn't look like himself when he got back into the lineup last year, putting up a .266/.351/.413 slash line in 119 games with 15 HRs, 29 stolen bases, and was caught stealing a league-leading eleven times.

The injury was poorly-timed too: Acuña was on an MVP pace when he got hurt, batting .283/.394/.596 with 24 homeruns, 17 stolen bases, and an 158 OPS+ through his 82 games up until tearing his ACL when trying to make a catch in the 5th inning of a game against the Miami Marlins on July 10th, 2021. The Braves would go on to trade for four outfielders at the trade deadline and ride those hot bats to a World Series championship, the first for the team since 1995.
