Buck Showalter Reveals How He Feels About Pete Alonso's Future With Mets

New York Mets former manager Buck Showalter spoke on the future of first baseman Pete Alonso.

The New York Mets enter the 2024 season in a different position than they were a year ago.

Last offseason, the Mets were expected to be one of the best teams in baseball. Instead, they were sellers at the deadline and aren't expected to be much better this year.

Despite that, there are some bright spots on the roster.

New York made intriguing moves this offseason and they still have stars in Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor.

Alonso enters free agency next offseason with the expectation of getting paid. It's uncertain if the Mets are willing to meet that asking price, but former manager Buck Showalter made it clear that he wants the slugger to be in New York for his entire career.

He said the following, according to Robert Sanchez of SNY.

"Whatever they decide there, believe me someone will love to have Pete on their club. I hope he's one of those guys that plays their whole career in one place because it would be great for the fans, but somebody else will make those decisions. He's gonna be able to pay the bills."

With the amount of money that Steve Cohen has shown he's willing to spend, re-signing Alonso shouldn't be much of an issue.

The 29-year-old is worth whatever contract he ends up landing as he's hit 37-plus home runs in every full season he's played.

Alonso finished the 2023 season with his third 40-plus home run season in four years, proving that he might very well be the top power hitter in the game.

For a Mets team that's struggled offensively at times, allowing their best hitter to walk wouldn't make sense.

Their goal is to be a contender starting in 2025.

Re-signing him needs to be their top priority as he's a true star and someone who seems to enjoy playing in Queens.
