Mets Still An Option To Sign Six-Time All-Star Slugger Despite Speculation

It sounds like the Mets could still sign the All-Star slugger

The New York Mets could have one more splash in the them before Opening Day.

New York should be able to earn more wins in 2024 than it did in 2023 but there still is room for growth. The designated hitter spot has had plenty of speculation. The club has indicated that it is going to use the spot to give some young players a chance but they also have been linked to multiple free agent veterans.

One player who has consistently popped up and reportedly remains an option for the club is six-time All-Star J.D. Martinez, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"I'm seeing three teams potentially in the mix right now which would be the (Los Angeles Angels) who are debating right now whether to go for a full-time DH who is a proven, established hitter or use it to move pieces around and have (Anthony Rendon) and other guys use that spot," Heyman said. "So Angels are a possibility and (Texas Rangers).

"They lost Mitch Garver...Texas lost Mitch Garver and obviously could use a DH. And the Mets. They need somebody to bat behind (Pete Alonso). He's been hitting 40-plus home runs kind of on his own there."

Martinez has been linked to New York because he almost makes too much sense. He hit 33 home runs last season and drove in 103 runs in just 113 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He won't cost much but would take away at-bats from younger players because he would be pretty much strictly a designated hitter. It's unclear if a deal will happen, but it still is possible.
