Former Mets Hurler Finds New Deal With Yankees

The New York Mets will see one of their former pitchers face them in Yankee pinstripes in 2024.

A former New York Mets pitcher is heading back to the Big Apple.

On Thursday the New York Yankees agreed to a two-year deal with pitcher Marcus Stroman, who spent the past two seasons with the Chicago Cubs.

But, before that, Stroman spent three seasons with the Mets.

The Mets traded for Stroman at the 2019 deadline, giving up two pitching prospects in Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods Richardson. In his 11 starts for the Mets he went 4-2 with a 3.77 ERA and struck out 60. For the season he finished 10-13 with a 3.22 ERA.

In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Stroman opted out of playing after he struggled with a calf muscle injury.

He returned in 2021 and was one of the Mets’ best starters. He went 10-13 in 33 starts with a 3.50 ERA as he struck out a team-leading 158 hitters.

He joined the Cubs in 2022 via free agency.

Before Stroman joined the Mets, he broke in with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2014 and played more than five seasons with the team. He went 47-45 in Toronto with a 3.76 ERA as he finished eighth in Cy Young voting and won a Gold Glove in 2018. In 2019 he made his first All-Star Game appearance.

For his career, Stroman has a record of 77-76 with a 3.45 ERA.

With the Cubs last season he started the year 9-6 with a 2.19 ERA in 19 starts, striking out 98 and walking 41. He made his second All-Star Game. A hip injury and a right rib cartilage fracture limited him to a 1-3 record in eight appearances (six starts) with a 8.63 ERA in 24 innings down the stretch.
