Angels Reportedly Pursuing Rumored Mets Target; Will New York Sign Superstar?

It sounds like the Mets will have competition for its rumored free-agent target

The New York Mets could use some more help in the middle of the lineup.

Opening Day will be here soon but there has been plenty of speculation that the Mets may not actually be done adding to the roster.

The designated hitter spot has had plenty of question marks. The Mets are expected to give Mark Vientos an extended opportunity but that hasn't stopped rumors from swirling that the club could end up signing six-time All-Star J.D. Martinez.

New York has spoken to the slugger but he still is out there in free agency looking for his next opportunity.

If the Mets do want to sign Martinez, it sounds like they are going to have some competition as the Los Angeles Angels reportedly are interested in him as well, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"Rumors were circulating after (Blake Snell) posted the famed eyeball emoji on his Instagram account that the Angels may be the ones making progress," Heyman said. "But all I could glean here is that the sides are talking. They are actually talking about both Snell and (designated hitter) J.D. Martinez both."

Martinez shined last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and clubbed 33 home runs and drove in 103 runs in 113 games played. The veteran slugger earned his sixth All-Star nod last season and certainly could help the Mets.

New York still has plenty of money to spend and certainly could afford Martinez, but at this point, it's unclear if it will sign him despite rumored interest.
