Former Mets Reliever, Father of Star QB, Arrested for DWI

A former New York Mets reliever, who helped them reach the 2000 World Series, was arrested on Saturday.

A former New York Mets reliever and a part of the team’s 2000 National League champions was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Texas on Saturday, according to TMZ.com and other news outlets.

That pitcher is Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of current Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes II, who is preparing to lead them into the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers next Sunday.

Mahomes Sr. played for the Mets for two seasons, joining them in 1999. That season he had perhaps the best season of his career, as he went 8-0 with a 3.68 ERA in 39 relief appearances, one year after he didn’t even play in the Majors. The Mets made the postseason and he pitched in four games and finished with a 2.25 ERA.

The following season he and the Mets went all the way to the World Series before losing to the New York Yankees. He went 5-3 with a 5.46 ERA in 53 games, five of which were starts. Mahomes Sr. did not pitch in that postseason.

Mahomes Sr. was arrested in Tyler, Texas, on Saturday night according to online booking records.

Tyler is near where Mahomes Sr. grew up in Lindale, Texas.

Mahomes Sr. has been arrested for DWI on multiple occasions, including an arrest in 2019 that led to a 40-day jail sentence that he served on weekends. USA Today reported that court records show that Mahomes Sr. has had 11 total incidents in the past.

Bond was reportedly not set, so it isn’t clear if Mahomes Sr. will be allowed to attend next Sunday’s Super Bowl in Las Vegas.

He played 11 MLB seasons with Minnesota, Boston, the New York Mets, Texas and Pittsburgh. He went 42-39 with a 5.47 ERA as a starter and reliever. His most notable season was in 2000 when he helped the New York Mets reach the World Series against the New York Yankees.

He was Minnesota’s sixth-round pick in 1988.
