Giants, Cubs Reportedly Pursuing One Time Rumored Mets Target

It sounds like the Mets aren't going to sign the former Blue Jays slugger

At one point it seemed like the New York Mets could end up landing four-time Gold Glove Award winner Matt Chapman.

While this was the case, it would be extremely surprising if New York actually signed him. The Mets were mentioned as a possible landing spot for Chapman early in the offseason but New York has gone in a different direction.

Two clubs that could end up landing Chapman, though, are the San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

"The Giants are in touch on Matt Chapman, and though manager Bob Melvin would love him, it isn’t known how close things are," Heyman said. "The Cubs are also a possibility for Chapman, and of course, they make sense for Cody Bellinger."

Chapman is one of the best offensive players available in free agency. The free agent market has moved extremely slowly and there still are some intriguing options available and Chapman is one.

He's arguably the top defensive third baseman in baseball and can add some pop to the middle of the lineup. He spent the last two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays but is a free agent and likely won't be returning to Toronto.

The Blue Jays recently signed Justin Turner so the club likely are out of the Chapman sweepstakes. He could make some sense for the Mets, but a signing would be extremely unlikely.

Don't be surprised if he lands with the Giants or Cubs soon.
