Mets All-Star Gives His Opinion On Pete Alonso's Future In New York

What is going to happen with the young slugger?

The biggest question mark swirling around the New York Mets right now certainly revolves around Pete Alonso's future with the club.

Will the young slugger remain with New York for the foreseeable future? Will the Mets eventually trade him rather than offering a massive contract? It really is unclear what will happen.

At this point, the most likely outcome appears to be that Alonso will play under his current contract throughout the 2024 campaign and test free agency next offseason. If the Mets don't think they can re-sign him a trade likely wouldn't happen until the trade deadline.

Alonso has said all of the right things so far, but the only way he will remain in New York is if the Mets pay up for him. It's unknown if they will do so, but fellow All-Star Jeff McNeil certainly hopes they will and said so on Foul Territory.

"I know he wants to be a Met, and we all want him to be a Met as well," McNeil said. "I know he loves New York, so hopefully we can keep him long-term. I don't want to see him play anywhere else. I want to see him be my teammate for a long time."

Alonso has become one of the top sluggers in all of baseball and certainly has developed into a fan-favorite in New York. The Mets will have a tough decision to make soon but keeping Alonso for the foreseeable future should be one of the top priorities.
